SELECTION PROCESS

The intention of the KVDF is to provide a platform to discuss architectural education in india. student projects are displayed to illustrate the various teaching and design methods employed across a section of architecture schools. the projects further act as catalysts in setting up specific issues and concerns that merit debate.

In this context, the selection process (pre-jury) is aimed at identifying trneds across projects rather than selecting projects based on merit. a discussion of architectural education cannot include or for that matter exclude projects on the basis of their success. the selection panel has accepted all the projects and identified issues that emerge from them. the emerging themes based on the projects will be put up shortly.

Kausik Mukhopadhyay, Mumbai

Kausik Mukhopadhyay was born in 1960, was trained in Shantiniketan and lives in Mumbai. He is a recipient of a 1990-91 Fellowship at Kanoria Centre for the Art, Ahmedabad. During this time had he developed association with School of Architecture, CEPT.

His work has been exhibited throughout India, as well as abroad at galleries and museums in Banglore, Bangladesh, Bombay, New Delhi, UK, US, etc.

Navnath Kanade, Bangalore

Bulk of work in this office consists of houses being built for middle class clients having limited budget with few exceptions. To achieve this conscious efforts are made to derive cost saving devises at every level, starting at design stage, by adopting strict structural system, by modifying construction method and using appropriate building material at local level or at times outsourcing from close vicinities depending on the circumstances. This has resulted into buildings being built with various materials like granite stone, stone slabs, cuddapph stone, laterite stone and also wire cut bricks.

Experimenting with these materials gradually led us to derive innovative method of construction which is cost effective and labour intensive.

In essence here Architecture is derived from method of construction kind of a building material used and building techniques. 

Hirante Welandawe, Sri Lanka

Hirante Welandawe graduated from University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. She apprenticed with B.V. Doshi at Stein Doshi & Bhalla at Sangath, the firm's atelier in Ahmadabad, India. She did her masters in urban design at Helsinki University of Technology, Finland.  Her practice H W Architects Pvt. Ltd. is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka from where the company operates projects in Sri Lanka, India and in Bahrain.  Welandawe is a visiting lecturer at the University of Moratuwa and has written and published her work extensively. 

Stephane Paumier, France-Delhi

1971	3rd february, born in versailles, france.
1989	baccalaureat from ecole estienne, national school of graphic arts and industries, paris.
1991	diploma of industrial design from ecole olivier de serres, national school of applied arts and crafts. paris.
1996	graduation of architecture from school of architecture of paris- belleville, paris, with prof henri e. ciriani. (d.p.l.g.). collaboration with lab fac architects, paris. ordre des architectes reg nb. 0920539
1997-1998	works as architect for the french ministry of economy & finance in delhi, india.
1999	own architectural practice in paris, associated to abrd architects for projects in india. assistant lecturer with prof. inge-lise weeke, school of architecture of paris la villette, paris.
2005	establishment of spa design pvt ltd (india) with indian architects anupam bansal and krishnachandran balakrishnan.
2005	silver medal of the french academia of architecture, prix dejean.

 

Rupali Gupte, Mumbai

Rupali Gupte is an architect, writer and urban researcher based in Mumbai. Rupali's engagement with architectural practice is multi-dimensional, involving design, research, teaching, and writing. As an urban researcher and designer she is interested in tactical urban conditions and design interventions. Rupali is currently involved as a core Faculty at KRVIA and is an executive member of CRIT (Collective Research Initiatives Trust), Mumbai.

About K V D Forum

The Kurula Varkey Design Forum is a platform provided by the School of Architecture,CEPT for the discussion of design thesis projects of students of architecture, in India and other SAARC countries.

The forum,started by the late Professor Kurula Varkey, tries to analyze a cross section of design thesis projects from schools across the country, in order to understand the emerging trends in architectonics today.

Eminent persons that work in the field;architects,interior designers,urban designers theorists and other practitioners are also invited to form a panel which analyzes the projects to give rise to a wide ranging discussion on space design .The last 3 years has seen greats like Juhanni Pallasma,Lucien Kroll,Kai Weise,B.V.Doshi and Channa Daswate on the panel.

In this 3 day forum,students also get an opportunity to see the works of these eminent personalities and listen to lectures that are held on various issues related to space design.
